Arlington County Public Health Division “TED” Exercise on April 25, 2013

The Arlington County Public Health Division will conduct a emergency preparedness exercise on April 25, 2013 in the Virginia Sqaure –Ballston area. Below is the announcement from ACPHD.

THIS IS A TEST; THIS IS ONLY A TEST

Arlington County Public Health Division “TED” Exercise

The Virginia Square-Ballston area has been chosen to participate in the To Every Door Exercise (TED EX) on Thursday, April 25, 2013. TED EX is designed to simulate door-to-door delivery of medication in the event of a public health emergency.

The Arlington County Public Health Division is conducting TED EX to understand how long it might take to deliver antibiotic medications and information houses in Arlington, in case of a public health emergency.

What to Expect

On the morning of Thursday, April 25, trained volunteers (identified by reflective vests and carrying official County photo identification) will spread out to several neighborhoods in Arlington and leave a bag with information on each doorknob. You do not need to be home when the bag is hung on your doorknob. The bag will contain emergency preparedness information and a small giveaway to simulate the weight of the actual medication that would be delivered. Because this is a timed exercise, volunteers may not reach all doorknobs in this area.

TED EX has two main goals: to test how long it would take to deliver medication or information directly to every residence (doorknob) and to enhance the County’s ability to respond in an emergency.

The TED EX is part of the County’s ongoing emergency preparedness work. There is no reason to believe an emergency of this kind will happen. However, we encourage you to visit the Arlington County Office of Emergency Management (OEM) home page to understand what you can do to be prepared. http://sites.arlingtonva.us/oem/

For more information on TED EX please visit http://www.arlingtonva.us/departments/HumanServices/PublicHealth/EmergencyMedication/page64972.aspx.

Please note that in the event of inclement weather, the exercise may be canceled in the Virginia Square-Ballston area.

Hurricane Sandy Trash and Recycling Update – Updated Schedule

Please see below the email from Arlington County regarding trash and recycling pickup:

All Monday and Tuesday collection services – trash, recycling, brush and leaf collection – will be deferred to Wednesday due to inclement weather. Please do not put your trash or recycling on the curb on Monday or Tuesday. Bagged leaves should be brought back from the curb to avoid leaves blowing into the street and storm drains. Once the storm has passed, crews will work to catch up on the collection schedule by the end the week (Saturday COB).

  • Monday/Tuesday customers should put bring trash and recycling to the curb on Wednesday morning
  • Wednesday/Thursday customers should bring trash and recycling to the curb on Thursday
  • Friday customers should still put their trash and recycling on the curb on Friday

Note that it may take crews an additional day to get to your route, but we do expect to complete this week’s service by Saturday. Thank you for your patience!

Please continue to watch for an announcement regarding brush collection following the storm. Additional services may be provided depending on the amount of storm damage.

Mosaic Park Update

Please see the email from County Staff regarding the construction of Mosaic Park below. Thank you to Allyson Ugarte for her continued participation in this community process.

Dear Mosaic Park Stakeholders:

I am writing to inform you that there will soon be an improvement to Mosaic Park. As you may know, the County purchased Mack’s Auto to incorporate this area into the Park and we are about to begin demolition of the auto repair shop. This work will begin within two weeks and conclude this summer. We do not anticipate using existing park space for demolition.

Once completed, the site will be grassed, usable, and combined with the existing Park. Within the next few years, the entire park will be redeveloped as the result of a larger project. For information on this overall effort (Mosaic Park Master Plan & Design), please visit our website at http://www.arlingtonva.us/departments/parksrecreation/scripts/planning/MasterPlanning/page65582.aspx. If you have any questions or would like additional information, please contact me.

Capital Bikeshare Expansion in Ballston

Arlington County is planning an expansion of Capital Bikeshare at the intersection of 11th St. N & N. Utah St. Please find a map showing the location of the additional Bikeshare station. In addition to this station, please find more information about planned stations, by clicking here.

Capital Bikeshare is a service provided by Arlington County and the District of Columbia Department of Transportation in regional cooperation. The service has been very successful with nearly 2,200,000 trips since its launch in September 2010, thanks to the ease of use in checking out and returning bikes and inexpensive membership and usage fees for our customers.

Should you have any questions about this station or the service in general, I may be reached at 202.684.8126 or paul@metrobike.net. For more information, visit www.CapitalBikeshare.com.

Hayes Park Temporary Closing

Hayes Park is scheduled to close on Monday June 18th & Tuesday June 19th 2012 from 7:00am until 3:00pm each day. There will be a contractor doing tree work throughout the park and for the safety of the park users and the contractors we feel that closing the park for these 2 days would be best. In the event of bad weather on Monday June 18th the job starting date would be rescheduled for Monday June 25th 2012. Signs will be posted either today or tomorrow advising the park users of the park closing
